I have turned wood for many years and I was taught in the art, 1 on 1, by a gentleman in the Borders of Scotland. Alas, I cannot recall his name. I have, on occasion, taught friends and family in the fundamentals of turning and the proper use of specific tools. I am very proud of my lathes and tools that I use in my turning. I produce most of my own feet, finials, handles and detailing for my furniture making using hardwoods such as ebony, walnut and rosewood. I have a 10 foot bed Wadkin lathe which I use for large pieces and the main turning work that I receive and require to produce for restoration and making. This lathe is also used in the production of duplicate original pieces and replicas of pieces required in restoration as it lends itself to such due to the tooling components that it enjoys. I have a 2 foot bed Viceroy lathe which I use for smaller, more delicate pieces and for bowl and other outboard turning. I have a precision mini lathe which I often use to create the tiniest of wooden components. Typically I would use this lathe to create or recreate handles and components made from fragile woods, bone and ivory (antique or replica). I also use this lathe where very small tolerances need to be maintained. I can also use this lathe for the production of soft and hard metal components. All of these lathes are vintage, British in their manufacture. They are scrupulously maintained and loved for their unrelenting quality. Whilst I use these lathes for my own work I am also happy to accept commissions from other makers, restorers, indeed anyone, for bespoke work. I have a good range of wood suitable for bespoke turning. Mark Adams
